Budtender Interview #14 - Taylor
Budtender | California
Name: Taylor or Goldie, whatever you’re into.
What state do you work in?: California (NorCal)
Care to share which dispensary you work at?: CBCB in Berkeley
Do you work Retail, Medical or both?: Just medical. California is a little behind on legalization.
How long have you been in the industry?: I’ve lived the industry life for a little over a year.
How did you go about getting into the industry?: I was a patient first. I picked my favorite club and went there consistently, loved the chill family vibe they gave off and I was like.. “This needs to be my life.”
How did you react to your first day working? Was it mind blowing?: My first day of work was crazy busy. I loved every second though. I did a lot of learning that day.
What is the most random question somebody has asked you about cannabis?: Hmm I think the readers would be surprised at the amount of random question budtenders get. The most random though definitely has to go to the patient that asked if the weed would make her mom to horny… I just smiled and said “It shouldn’t”. I was dying slowly on the inside.
Ever have any awkward moments with a patient or customer?: Ha, well besides the patient from the above question, plenty of awkward moments. They usually come after people ask me to show them all of our 8ths that are $30 for example then I pull them all out so they can smell. Then they look at me and ask so these are your $30 8ths? Or they say are these all of the $30 8ths? There is definitely an awkward moment that follows that.
Is there a patient or customer that you have seen improve their health due to cannabis use? If so, explain.: Oh definitely. I’ve gotten a few patients that are going through chemo and they can’t eat or they’re in a ton of pain and after a few months of working with them its always a great feeling to see them come in looking like they gained a little weight or they come in walking without their cane. It feels even better when they come and tell you what you recommended them is actually really helping.
Cannabis Edibles seem to be a touchy subject in the news. Have you ever had a bad experience with them? Also, how many MG of THC do you recommend for a first time consumer?: I have truly pushed my own limitations with edibles. My most recent experience was with 1000mgs. It wasn’t a bad experience but it was definitely crazy being heavily medicated for 2days. Starting people off I like to give them about 15-25mgs.
Do you have an all time favorite strain? If so, why is it your favorite?: OMG GOD'S GIFT! GDP x OG KUSH. Talk about a heavy hitter. It was Jesus OG, see a theme going?
Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the industry?: Make good connections, be nice to your budtender, stay steadfast. On the inside looking out it seems pretty intimidating to even try to break in the industry but if you talk to the right people and remain focused on what you want just like anything else you can make this happen.
The cannabis industry is new and obviously has a lot of improving to do. Where would you like to see improvement in the industry?: We need an overall standard on the way dispensaries are run, we need less required testing or at least be testing for relevant things. And I think we all need to pitch in a try to change the stigma that is attached to cannabis. Its all fun and games to get called a “legal drug dealer” but I feel like were so much more.
How do you explain the difference in the effects of Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid strains?: Easy, indica is in-da-couch or nighttime use and sativa is for your fun daytime high. Hybrid is a mix of both. If they need it I can go more in depth.
What’s the largest amount of flower you have smoked in one setting?: Well my friend and I got a pound of some backyard boogie when I was like 19 and in one setting we made a nice sized dent. It took a day and half to finish the whole thing.
Where do you see the cannabis industry in 5 years? I see legalization throughout America. Both for medicinal and recreational use. I would also like to see more clinical testing on the medicinal benefits of Marijuana.
Do you use cannabis more so Medically or Recreationally? Explain please.: Medically, I smoke to gain an appetite and my emotions are all over the place smoking keeps me pretty mellow.
Have any hobbies? Any examples you would like to share?: When I’m not tending a lot of my life right now is still cannabis related. Growing, trimming, saying nice things to my plants. I’m like a weed nerd haha. But I love being a girl I’m all about hair done, nails done everything did. I also like to quote Drake.
Where can people connect with you? Instagram? Massroots?: Follow me on Instagram! @Namasteitstay
What are you most grateful for today?: I’m just happy to be alive, healthy and Loved.
